The Atlantic hurricane season that runs from June 1st to November 30th is almost underway! South Carolina is one of the most vulnerable states in the nation to be impacted by hurricanes, so emergency preparedness is especially important for residents of barrier island communities.

Please plan to attend the Disaster Awareness Day on Thurs. May 29, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Seabrook Island Club Clubhouse (Atlantic Room). The event is co-sponsored by the Town of Seabrook Island and the Town of Kiawah Island.

We have an exciting lineup of speakers to help you prepare for any disaster that could come our way.

The featured guest speaker will be Dana Souza, City Manager for Sanibel Island, FL. Dana will speak about how Hurricane Ian decimated Sanibel Island in 2022 and how the island continues to recover today. He will have impactful stories to share about how a major hurricane can affect a community.

The new director for Charleston County Emergency Management
Department (CCEMD), Justin Pierce, will speak as well as Chief Ryan Kunizter (STJFD). Both will provide information about the support each department offers to Charleston County during a disaster.

Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh from Live 5 News will emcee the event.

Valuable prizes will be raffled off throughout the event! A FREE lunch will be provided to attendees at 12:00 pm following the conclusion of the program. No RSVP is required.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get a crash course on emergency preparedness and learn helpful tips on how to protect your family and your property. Disaster Awareness Day is also a great opportunity for residents to speak with representatives from emergency management agencies.

Non-Seabrook Island residents should stop at the SIPOA security gate upon arrival. Please tell the security agent that you are attending Disaster Awareness Day and a restricted gate pass will be provided.
