Mayor Ron Ciancio
Mayor Ron Ciancio and his wife, Sue, moved to Seabrook Island from Chicago, IL in 2006. In Chicago, Mayor Ciancio served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel and Secretary of GATX Corporation, a publicly held corporation that specializes in railcar leasing.
In his early years on Seabrook Island, Mayor Ciancio served on the SIPOA Board of Directors and was Chair of its Legal Committee. He served as president of Sea Island Habitat for Humanity and has been a board member and president of the Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy. Mayor Ciancio was elected to Town Council in 2011. He served as Mayor Pro Tempore from 2013 to 2015 and was elected Mayor in 2015. He was re-elected to a second term as Mayor in 2017. Accomplishments during Mayor Ciancio's tenure include enhancing the town's capacity to communicate directly with property owners; implementing a memorandum of understanding between the town and SIPOA that clearly defines the responsibilities of each entity; increasing the Town’s Emergency Reserve Fund by over 70%; hiring a full-time Beach Patrol during the peak tourist season; establishing the town’s authority to issue up to $4.5 million in bonds for post-disaster clean-up efforts; and initiating a major project to repair and upgrade the storm drainage system on Seabrook Island Road. Mayor Ciancio also serves as the town’s liaison to the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCD COG) and has participated in several regional initiatives relating to transportation and planning in and around Johns Island. Under the Mayor-Council form of government, the Mayor is the chief administrative officer of the town. He is empowered by statute to appoint and remove employees, direct administrative departments, preside at Town Council meetings, enforce the laws and ordinances of the town, and perform other duties as required by law.
