Hurricane Ian Advisory #7
October 1, 2022 – 12:00 pm

Hurricane Ian made landfall on the afternoon of Friday, September 30, 2022, as a Category 1 storm near Georgetown, SC, with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. Now a Post Tropical Cyclone, Ian continues to move away from our area and into the mid-Atlantic region. All severe weather warnings have been cancelled for the state of South Carolina, and no hazardous weather is expected this weekend and into next week.

Earlier this morning, officials from the Town of Seabrook Island, the Seabrook Island Property Owners Association (SIPOA), and volunteers from the Seabrook Island Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted a preliminary damage assessment of the town. While some trees and limbs have been downed by heavy winds, the town has received no reports of any significant damage. At this time, all utilities remain operational and all roads within the town are passable; however, residents and visitors are advised to use caution when traveling as vegetative debris and pockets of standing water may remain on roadways and pathways for the next several days.

Residents are encouraged to report any structural damage, downed trees, and areas of localized flooding to the town as soon as possible. Damage reports may be sent via email to jcronin@townofseabrookisland.org. Please include your name, address, and photos of the damage (if available). The reporting of this information should not be considered a claim for reimbursement. Residents should file claims for damage or other losses with their insurance company. Any information received from residents and property owners will be aggregated and reported to Charleston County as part of a countywide damage assessment.

The town has returned to OPCON 3 (Normal Operations). Town Hall will re-open for regular officer hours at 8:00 am on Monday.

This is the final town advisory regarding Hurricane Ian.

Property owners and managers with rental guests should forward this information to their rental guests. Owners and managers of commercial establishments are also encouraged to share this information with their employees

Hurricane Ian Advisory #6

September 30, 2022 – 3:00 pm

Hurricane Ian made landfall this afternoon as a Category 1 storm near Georgetown, SC, with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. The area remains under a HURRICANE WARNING and FLASH FLOOD WARNING.

Per National Weather Service Charleston, gusts of more than 70 mph have been recorded in Charleston Harbor. Based on the storm’s track as it approached the coast, the offshore wind direction reduced the threat of major flooding in our area; however, there are still many road closures, downed trees, and scattered power outages throughout the county. Tropical storm force winds and heavy rains are forecast to continue in the Charleston Tri-County area for the remainder of this afternoon and are expected to decrease after 6:00 pm today. There are no significant weather concerns for Saturday.

St. John’s Fire District reports that several trees have been downed across their service area. Most roadways have been cleared, but River Road is currently closed at Burden Creek Road due to a very large tree down across the road. SCDOT has been made aware of the issue, but SJFD is uncertain on the time frame for clearing. Parts of Johns Island remain without power/internet.

Charleston County's emergency status remains at OPCON 1 (Disaster Imminent or Occurring / Full Emergency Response Operations) and all county offices are closed today. The county’s citizen information line is available for non-emergency calls between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm at (843) 746-3900. For shelter locations, please contact the county’s citizen information line or visit the county website at www.charlestoncounty.org.

The Town of Seabrook Island is currently at OPCON 2 (Enhanced Readiness / Disaster Impacts Likely). Town offices remain closed today and all beach patrol services have been suspended. Officials from the town will conduct a damage assessment at 10:00 am on Saturday. Residents are encouraged to report structural damage, downed trees, and areas of localized flooding. Damage reports may be sent via email to jcronin@townofseabrookisland.org. Please include your name, address, and photos (if available).

Residents, property owners, and visitors are advised to monitor local media outlets for updates on Hurricane Ian. Forecasts are also updated regularly on the National Hurricane Center website at www.hurricanes.gov.

Until conditions begin improving later this evening, individuals are encouraged to heed the following recommendations:

  • Be prepared for the possible loss of power
  • Shelter in place and avoid unnecessary travel
  • Do not walk or drive through water
  • Be advised that bridges on and off Johns Island and throughout the county may be deemed unsafe for travel due to high winds
  • Call 911 in the event of an emergency; however, be advised that police, fire, and EMS resources may be limited and/or relocated during high winds and/or flooding

The next Town advisory is anticipated to be distributed on the afternoon of Saturday, October 1st, unless conditions warrant an earlier update.

Property owners and managers with rental guests should forward this information to their rental guests. Owners and managers of commercial establishments are also encouraged to share this information with their employees.

Hurricane Ian Advisory #4
September 28, 2022 – 6:00 pm

Hurricane Ian made landfall along the Florida Gulf Coast on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 28, 2022, as a strong Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. Hurricane Ian is now moving northeast across the state of Florida and is expected to emerge into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.

There is still uncertainty with the track and intensity of the storm after it emerges from the east coast of Florida. Because Ian is now forecast to be over the Atlantic Ocean for a longer period of time, there is an increased possibility of hurricane force winds in our area.

Earlier today, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Hurricane Watch for coastal counties, including Charleston County. The area also remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning.

According to NWS Charleston, there is high confidence that Hurricane Ian will impact our area. Below is a summary of today’s report from NWS Charleston:

  • Minor to moderate wind damage is possible. Tropical storm force winds (39-73 mph) are expected along the South Carolina coast starting on Thursday and continuing into Friday. The best chance for tropical storm force winds, and possibly low-end hurricane force wind gusts (74+ mph), will be along the immediate coast and within any rain bands. Scattered power outages due to downed trees and limbs are a possibility.
  • Moderate coastal flooding is expected Thursday through Saturday, especially during times of high tide. The highest threat for coastal flooding is expected Friday and Friday night. A storm surge of 4-5 feet is possible along the South Carolina coast.
  • Moderate to high threat for flooding rainfall on Friday and early Saturday, especially during times of high tide. A total of 6-8 inches of rain is possible along the coast, with locally higher amounts.
  • Isolated tornadoes are possible, mainly within stronger rain bands between Thursday and Friday nights. The highest threat for tornadoes will be in the coastal areas, especially from Savannah northward.
  • Life-threatening marine/surf conditions will exist Wednesday night through early Saturday, with the worst conditions expected Friday and Friday night. Moderate to severe beach erosion, high surf conditions and dangerous rip currents are likely.

On Wednesday afternoon, Governor Henry McMaster declared a statewide State of Emergency effective at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, September 28th. The Governor has not issued an evacuation order.

During a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, representatives from the Charleston County Emergency Management Department (CCEMD) encouraged residents in low-lying and flood prone areas to consider relocating during the storm. CCEMD representatives also announced the following actions in advance of Hurricane Ian:

  • The county has moved its operational status to OPCON 2 (Enhanced Readiness / Disaster Impacts Likely)
  • The county will open two shelters on Thursday, September 29th. For shelter locations, opening times, and transportation options, please visit www.charlestoncounty.org.
  • The county will activate its citizen information line beginning at 8:00 am on Thursday, September 29th. For non-emergencies, residents may call the citizen information line at (843) 746-3900 between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. In the event of an emergency, DIAL 911.
  • All county offices will be closed on Thursday, September 29th, and Friday, September 30th.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Town of Seabrook Island has also moved its operational status to OPCON 2 (Enhanced Readiness / Disaster Impacts Likely). Town offices will close at 12:00 pm on Thursday, September 29th, and will remain closed on Friday, September 30th. Beach patrol services will also be suspended on Friday, September 30th.

Hurricane Ian Advisory #2
September 26, 2022 – 3:00 pm

On Monday, September 26, 2022, officials from the Town of Seabrook Island participated in a regional conference call with Charleston County Emergency Management Department (“CCEMD”) to receive an update on Hurricane Ian.

Hurricane Ian was upgraded from a tropical storm on Monday morning. It is expected to rapidly intensify once it enters the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to become a major hurricane on Tuesday. While confidence in the storm track remains uncertain, current models predict Ian to make landfall on the Florida Gulf coast late Thursday or early Friday.

According to National Weather Service Charleston, the key takeaways from today’s call were as follows:

  • Gusty winds, possibly to tropical storm force, are expected to develop Wednesday night through Friday. Winds will be highest over southeastern Georgia and along the immediate South Carolina coast.
  • The threat for coastal flooding will become more likely with the high tides beginning on Wednesday. Tides could reach moderate to perhaps major coastal flood levels on Thursday and perhaps Friday. Any rainfall that coincides with high tide will exacerbate conditions.
  • Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall will become more likely Thursday night through Friday. Locally heavy rainfall could result in flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Between 6-8 inches of rainfall are possible by Friday.
  • Isolated brief tornadoes and waterspouts are possible late Thursday night into Friday.
  • High surf, dangerous rip currents, and beach erosion will be possible.

Residents, property owners and visitors are advised to monitor local media outlets for updates on Hurricane Ian and to make early preparations for potential storm impacts, including possible power outages. Forecasts are also updated regularly on the National Hurricane Center website at www.hurricanes.gov.

The Town of Seabrook Island remains at OPCON 3 (Normal Operating Conditions) as we continue to monitor Hurricane Ian.

The next Town advisory is anticipated to be distributed after the CCEMD conference call on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 27th, unless conditions warrant an earlier update.

Property owners and managers with rental guests should forward this information to their rental guests. Owners and managers of commercial establishments are also encouraged to share this information with their employees.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm is forecast to make landfall along the Florida Gulf Coast as a strong tropical storm or category 1 hurricane (74-95 mph winds). While the system is expected to weaken before moving into Georgia and South Carolina, the Charleston region is currently under a tropical storm watch. The main threats from Tropical Storm Elsa in our area will include heavy rains, flooding, rip currents and gusty winds beginning Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.

Residents, property owners and visitors are advised to monitor local media outlets for updates on Tropical Storm Elsa. Forecasts are also updated regularly on the National Hurricane Center website at www.hurricanes.gov. Property owners are encouraged to secure or remove outdoor objects like lawn furniture, garbage cans and other materials that may be blown by the wind.

HURRICANE ISAIAS ADVISORY #6
August 4, 2020 -- 12:00 pm

The outer bands of Hurricane Isaias brushed the coast of Charleston County during the afternoon hours of Monday, August 3rd. The center of the storm remained offshore, which resulted in lower wind speeds and rainfall amounts in the Charleston region. The National Weather Service upgraded Isaias from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane at 5:00 pm on Monday, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, NC, shortly after 11:00 pm on Monday.

As of noon Tuesday, no significant damage has been reported on Seabrook Island and all roads leading to and from the island are clear of water and debris. The Town of Seabrook Island has resumed normal operating conditions and Town Hall re-opened for regular office hours (8:00 am to 4:00 pm) on Tuesday.

The Town of Seabrook Island maintains lists of local contractors who are licensed to offer emergency blue tarp services (such as placing temporary protective coverings over damaged structures) and tree removal services following a hurricane or other disaster. If your home or property suffered damage as a result of the storm, please click here to view the town’s licensed contractor lists.

This is the final advisory for Hurricane Isaias.
