NOTICE OF GENERAL ELECTION TOWN OF SEABROOK ISLAND, SC NOVEMBER 5, 2019 NOTICE: THE CANDIDATE FILING DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 12:00 PM ON WED. SEPTEMBER 11TH DUE TO HURRICANE DORIAN NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration will conduct a General Election on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 to fill (1) one seat for the office of Mayor, and (4) four Town Council seats. This is a nonpartisan, at large municipal election. Election results will be determined by the plurality method. Term of office will expire on November 2021. The Town of Seabrook Island will have one (1) Utility Commissioner Seat to fill for a (6) year term to expire November 2025. The last day that persons may register to be eligible to vote in this election is October 5, 2019. If submitting a registration by mail application, it must be post marked no later than October 5, 2019. A Statement of Economic Interest form must be filed electronically (on-line) at http://ethics.sc.gov prior to filing a Statement of Candidacy and or Petition. Those requiring electronic filing assistance may contact the South Carolina State Ethics Commission at (803) 253-4192. Candidate filing opens noon on Thursday, August 8, 2019 and closes 12:00 noon Wednesday, September 11, 2019 (extended from Friday, September 6, 2019, due to Hurricane Dorian). There are no filing fees for the office of Mayor, Town Council and Utility Commission. Residents desiring to file as a candidate for the office of Mayor, Town Council and Utility Commission must file a Statement of Candidacy with the Town Clerk/Treasurer at the Town Hall, 2001 Seabrook Island Rd, Seabrook Island, and SC. Office business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registered voters who cannot vote in person may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration. At 9:00 a.m., on Election Day, the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration will begin the examination of the absentee ballot return envelopes. This process will take place at the elections office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston, SC. On Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 9:20 a.m., the Charleston County Board of Canvassers will hold a public hearing at the elections office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston, SC, to determine the validity of all ballots challenged in this election, and certify election results. This municipal election will be held under the new rules for providing Photo ID at the polling place fixed by law in this county. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 30th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the Kiawah Island Municipal Center (4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway).
Meet the Candidates Event Schedule
During the Q&A session, Mayor Ron Ciancio of Seabrook Island and Mayor Craig Weaver of Kiawah Island will be asking the candidates a series of questions on behalf of residents of both jurisdictions. Any resident who wishes to suggest a question for the candidates may do so in advance of the meeting. Questions should be submitted no later than Monday, May 21st. Seabrook Island residents may send their questions to [email protected]. The Towns of Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island make up an important part of Charleston County Council's District 9 jurisdiction, and a good voter turnout can determine the election. The Republican primary election for the District 9 Council race will be held on Tuesday, June 12th. There is no Democrat primary for the District 9 Council race on June 12th.
