ATAX Advisory Committee accepting applications for FY 2020 funding requests

6/6/2019

The Town of Seabrook Island Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee is currently accepting applications for FY 2020 State Accommodations Tax (ATAX) funding. Interested applicants must submit a completed application to the Town Clerk by 12:00 pm on Tues. July 2, 2019. The ATAX Advisory Committee will consider funding requests during its upcoming meeting on Thu. July 11, 2019 at 9:30 am, at which time the committee will vote on funding recommendations to Town Council.

State ATAX funds must be used to attract or provide for tourists, and cannot be used for any item that would normally be provided by a county or municipality. Eligible projects include:

  • advertising and promotion of tourism so as to develop and increase tourist attendance through the generation of publicity;
  • promotion of the arts and cultural events;
  • construction, maintenance, and operation of facilities for civic and cultural activities including construction and maintenance of access and the nearby roads and utilities for the facilities;
  • the criminal justice system, law enforcement, fire protection, solid waste collection, and health facilities when required to serve tourists and tourist facilities. (The amount of the expenditure is required to be based on the estimated percentage of cost directly attributed by tourists);
  • public facilities such as restrooms, dressing rooms, parks and parking lots;
  • tourist shuttle transportation;
  • control and repair of waterfront erosion; and
  • operating visitor information centers.

For additional information regarding eligible SATAX expenditures, please refer to the SC Department of Revenue’s official advisory opinion contained in SC Revenue Ruling #98-22.

A responsible person from the submitting organization must attend the ATAX Advisory Committee meeting on Thu. July 11, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. to present the request (limit to five minutes) and to answer questions from committee members.

Recommendations made by the ATAX Advisory Committee must be approved by the Seabrook Island Town Council before funds may be committed to the applicant or dispersed by the Town.

For more information, please contact Faye Allbritton, Town Clerk, by phone at (843) 768-9121 or by email at fallbritton@townofseabrookisland.org.

Seabrook Island & Kiawah Island to co-host Disaster Awareness Day on Fri. June 14th

6/3/2019

Fri. June 14, 2019
10:00 am to 12:00 pm -- FREE lunch to follow

Seabrook Island Club Clubhouse (Atlantic Room)
3772 Seabrook Island Road, Seabrook Island, SC 29455

The Atlantic hurricane season that runs from June 1st to November 30th is now underway! South Carolina is one of the most vulnerable states in the nation to be impacted by hurricanes, so emergency preparedness is especially important for residents of barrier island communities.

Please plan to attend the Disaster Awareness Day on Fri. June 14, 2019, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Seabrook Island Club Clubhouse (Atlantic Room). The event is co-sponsored by the Town of Seabrook Island and the Town of Kiawah Island.

This year’s program will feature a variety of subject area experts on three panels, including:

  • An evacuation has been ordered… Now What?
  • Communication is Key: Public Information Before, During & After a Disaster
  • Other Hazards: Flooding, King Tides & Earthquakes

Valuable prizes will be raffled off throughout the event, and one lucky winner will receive the grand prize of an Amazon Echo! A FREE lunch will be provided to attendees at 12:00 pm following the conclusion of the program. No RSVP is required.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get a crash course on emergency preparedness and learn helpful tips on how to protect your family and your property. Disaster Awareness Day is also a great opportunity for residents to speak with representatives from more than a dozen emergency management agencies.

For more information, please contact Joe Cronin at jcronin@townofseabrookisland.org or by calling (843) 768-9121.
